I stopped in to Philly Soft Pretzel Factory this morning to pick up some a warm breakfast treat for my co-workers. I work in a place that is hit or miss on folks showing up on Friday. Since we can do our job just as easy from home, many people (especially in the summer time) do not come in on Fridays. So, there are 200+ people here on a regular day, it was a crap shoot how many would arrive this morning. I decided to purchase 50 pretzels. That may have been a mistake. It is now 9:10 AM and there are at least 45 pretzels left.
Anyway, while waiting for my 50 pretzels to finish baking (they wanted to give me the freshest, hottest possible pretzels, so they baked a batch special for me!) I started chatting it up with the owner of the franchise. This is her first store and she is looking to expand as needed to more franchises.
I mentioned how quickly she was able to turn the storefront (former candy shop) into the PSPF and in comparison the length of time it is taking 8 East to open. According to her, 8 East is at least ONE YEAR away from opening. They have only been able to complete the facade of the building due to zone restrictions and permit issues. They have recently begun building out the inside of the facility and she was told they are at least a year away.
I expressed concern that he would be paying out on a lease without an incoming revenue stream. She mentioned that they own the building so that does not appear to be an issue and they are in no financial stress due to the length of time it is taking to complete construction.
So, assuming she is correct, we are at least 10-12 months away from 8 East opening. On the flip side, Philly Soft Pretzel Factory is open, the pretzels are great and the owner is a sweetheart who gave me a free pretzel. Can’t beat that.
