We Ain’t Doing So Bad

June 13th, 2009 · 3 Comments · General

I’m traveling for work in Dallas, Texas this week.  I have a bit of downtime as the project work slows down and I have taken the opportunity to drive around and get a bit lost in the corners of the\is fairly large city.  Some observations…

  1. The Philadelphia area economy is not bad.  Not by a long shot.  I had to take a trip to the ‘Burbs of Dallas to locate a Fry’s Electronics. (think combination Best Buy, MicroCenter and RadioShack — on steroids)  The shear number of empty storefronts, car dealerships and restaurants was incredible.  I’m talking blocks and blocks of emptiness.  This, on top of the quantity of pawn shops, title loan stores and check cashing outlets remind me that even in the worse economy, someone is able to profit.
  2. I have not seen a large number of for-sale signs.  I have not yet ventured into the more residential areas, but I will.  I’m not sure if there are not a large number of homes for sale, the homes have already been foreclosed on, or what.  But, I have not seen many.
  3. The weather here sucks.  There have been tornado warning every day I have been here.  I hardly slept on Wednesday night because the thunder and lighting kept me up.
  4. There seems to be an overabundance of chain stores here.  There are very few what I would call mom and pop places.  There is also no small town or walkable areas.  One of my favorite things about Conshohocken is the ability to walk to just about anything I need.

I’m looking forward to heading home.  I miss my Conshy.
