Election Results — Some Surprises

November 4th, 2009 · No Comments · News, Politics

So, after the election I was checking out the Montgomery County Election Results site and noticed some interesting things about our most recent election day:

  • Turnout was lackluster.  Only about 125,000 voters out of a total of 576,000.  So, about 25% turnout.  Not sure what the national average is but this seems low.  Maybe because there was not much to vote on beyond local positions and judges.
  • Some (what I would think) upsets in the Borough.  Sandy Caterbone, the sitting President of Borough Council and Council Rep for Ward 4, was defeated by Republican Carolyn Maye.  I live in Ward 4 and Carolyn stopped by my house.  She seems like a nice person and I look forward to working with her.  The big surprise with the defeat of Sandy is the fact she is a Democrat in a largely Democrat town (change on the horizon?) and her loss puts another Republic in a Council seat.  Might be interesting how things play out.
  • Republican Robert Stokley retained his seat for another year, soundly defeating his challenger.
  • Democrat candidate for Mayor Martin Eckert won the position by only 4 votes, 806 to 802.  I can’t stress enough how important every vote is in these small town elections.
